Gympie to Wheel in crowd favourite

One of the major highlights from the 2021 Bosch Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) will make its grand return this season.

After being missed last year due to the heavy rain in the Gympie region, the highly successful Wheels on Mary will once again kick off the 2023 Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland in the centre of Gympie.

Taking place on the Friday evening before the official action gets underway, Wheels on Mary is the perfect opportunity for fans to meet and greet the stars of the ARC.

The festival-like showcase first took place ahead of the 2021 event where the spectacular machinery of the ARC was on display in front of a huge attending crowd.

The Gympie community will once again be treated to the exciting evening with an even better array of top-spec rally cars expected to fill the town’s central hub on Mary Street.

In addition to the cars, there will be live entertainment, food options and lots of other activities to accommodate attendees of all ages before the rally begins on Saturday.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig was looking forward to welcoming the ARC for the event and to the Wheels on Mary getting the rally started on a high.

“Gympie Regional Council is beyond excited to be hosting the Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland in our region again for 2023,” Hartwig said.

“Our teams have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure our flood impacted roads have been repaired and upgraded in time for this event.

“We are also expecting Wheels on Mary to be bigger and better, building off the success of the last two years, with live entertainment, classic cars, food vendors and loads more. The rally cars lining the street are always a bit hit with locals and visitors alike.

“This year, the Kickass Rally Village at Gympie Showgrounds will be the place to be for enthusiasts to get a taste of the behind-the-scenes action of rally life. With food stalls, merchandise vendors and access to the rally teams, this will be a great opportunity to connect with the fans and make some new ones.

“We’re hopeful that again we will see thousands of people come into the Gympie region, supporting the local community and enjoying a weekend to remember.”

Set over two days and run as a Sprint format, the rally event will see crews tackle 217 competitive kilometres across 14 stages, with 131 kilometres run over eight stages on the Saturday and 86 kilometres over six stages on Sunday, including EROAD Power Stage.

Entries for the event open on 9 June and close on 7 July, while more details regarding Wheels on Mary will be released in the coming weeks.

The Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland takes place in Gympie on 21-23 July.
