Dimmock hopeful local knowledge gives him advantage

This weekend’s Bosch Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) season finale will be an exciting prospect for a number of local drivers entered in the Subaru Canberra Rally of Canberra.

Behind the wheel of a Toyota GR Yaris AP4 alongside co-driver Larisa Biggar, local rising star James Dimmock will be entered in both the ARC and the Motorsport Australia New South Wales Championship components of the event and is one driver fans should keep an eye on.

And while Dimmock will not be fighting for the outright ARC title like his fellow Canberrans in Lewis and Harry Bates, he will still be looking to end a mixed season on a high.

The Canberra-based event is notorious for attrition as it’s a highly challenging endurance rally – where all 12 stages over the two days will contribute to crews’ final time.

For that reason, Dimmock will be hoping to utilise his strong knowledge of the roads to make it to the end and place within the outright top 10.

“This year’s Rally of Canberra will feature two very different days,” Dimmock said.

“Saturday’s stages will run through the Tidbinbilla Forests, to the west of Canberra, and will be quite technical. While Sundays in the Kowen Forests to the east of the city will be very different but still very technical.

“It looks like it’ll be a competitive weekend, with the New South Wales guys also running. There will be good battles.

“Our goal for the weekend is to consolidate learnings from earlier in the year and score another top-ten finish.

“If we finish every stage, that’ll give us a good chance to get a result.”

The 27-year-old won’t be the only Dimmock in action during the final round either, with James’ father Peter also entered.

Peter will be running in James’ Ford Fiesta from 2022 and will have co-driver Leigh Brimson-Pierce calling the notes.

“Dad has been involved in rallying on and off for 40 years and has competed in the Rally of Canberra 15 times,” Dimmock added.

“It will be fantastic to not only compete against him but also lean on his experience, especially in tricky conditions, as he has competed on these roads many times.”
