Dual CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Champions AGI Sport have confirmed plans to compete in the 2020 CAMS Australian Rally Championship with a Ford Fiesta R5.
To be spearheaded by driver Luke Anear, who shot to prominence after claiming a sensational podium at Kennards Hire Rally Australia in 2018 in his third ever gravel rally, it is the first Fiesta R5 to be permanently based in Australia.
Originally built by World Rally Championship squad M-Sport, the R5 machinery is one-step below the full-specification WRC cars and is popular in the WRC2 class. The Fiesta is currently en route to land in Australia from the United Kingdom.
The Fiesta joins the other prominent R5 Skoda Fabia piloted by West Australian John O’Dowd, with the same car claiming last year’s Australian Rally Championship with Eli Evans and Ben Searcy.
Anear is this week in Tasmania competing in the famous Targa Tasmania tarmac rally aboard an AGI branded Subaru WRX, where he finished the opening day tenth outright and first in the GT4 class.
AGI Sport’s Formula 4 squad meanwhile has kept busy during the gap after the Australian Grand Prix opening round in Melbourne, with test days at Sydney Motorsport Park and Phillip Island.
Luis Leeds is at the top of the championship standings with 45 points to his name, and an eight point buffer between his Team BRM rivals Ryan Suhle and Lochie Hughes heading into the second round at Sydney Motorsport Park on 17–19 May.
