Vale Ali Drower

The EROAD Australian Rally Championship (ARC) is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Alison “Ali” Drower.

Ali was best-known for her remarkable career across radio, television, and motorsport broadcasting, where she made a lasting impact on the sport and helped shape the way rallying and racing were shared with Australian audiences.

Born in 1964, Ali began her media journey in radio, quickly rising to prominence on Triple M, where she worked alongside Doug Mulray during one of the station’s golden eras. With her sharp wit, warmth and professionalism, Ali soon transitioned to television, where she became one of the most recognisable faces in motorsport media.

In the early 2000s, Ali was part of Network Ten’s Australian Rally Championship coverage alongside a host of notable names, including current ARC host, Greg Rust.

With the ARC in a memorable period that featured icons like Possum Bourne, Neal Bates and manufacturers such as Subaru and Toyota, her role was pivotal in helping deliver a unique documentary-style broadcast that combined stage stories, live interviews and technical insights.

Ali’s presence brought not only credibility and knowledge, but also a balance of fun and energy that helped showcase the personalities of rally’s biggest stars.

At the same time, Ali was a featured reporter on RPM – Network Ten’s long-running Sunday motorsport magazine show, which covered Supercars, MotoGP, Formula 1 and the ARC – her ability to inject humour and humanity often breaking down barriers with competitors and leading to her becoming a trusted voice and respected figure in motorsport circles.

She was also among the pioneers for women in motorsport media in Australia, blazing a trail for future generations well before formal diversity initiatives began.

Tragically, Ali lost her short battle with cancer on Sunday 28 September and is survived by her husband, Rick, and their son Zach, as well as the greater Bates family, which includes ARC champions Harry, Lewis and Neal Bates.

Ali’s infectious smile, vibrancy, and love for motorsport will continue to inspire. She will be greatly missed by her family, colleagues, and the rally and motorsport communities who were fortunate enough to share in her journey.

The EROAD Australian Rally Championship extends its deepest condolences to the Drower and Bates families.
