BRZ-ing to the 2WD Cup

West Australians Dave and Kelly Thomas have claimed the 2024 ARC 2WD Cup title, making it two consecutive seasons that a Subaru BRZ has won the class.

The 2WD Cup was won in 2023 with Victorians Ben and Cathy Hayes aboard their 2WD Subaru BRZ, and the Thomas’ repeated the feat in 2024 with their own BRZ.

Their journey was one of highs, challenges, and teamwork, resulting in two spectacular wins at the Rally of Canberra and their home rally in Western Australia, finishing the season with 305 points.

The father-daughter pairing showcased grit and determination, contesting all four eligible rounds to secure the cup, a feat no other 2WD crew managed this year.

This placed the duo ahead in the battle for the cup, with their rivals Justin Northage and co-driver Scott Muhling finishing 185 points behind first place.

For Kelly, the season also brought individual success, as she emerged as a strong contender for the Junior Cup co-driver honours.

“To win the title alongside my daughter Kelly feels great,” Thomas said.

“Except for our home event, every round was new for us, so it was key that we finished each one, especially after travelling all the way from the west.

“I’ve competed for quite a few years now and it was the most sensible I’ve ever driven!”

Their commitment was tested from the start, with their Subaru BRZ ready to race only days before the opening round in Canberra.

“The car wasn’t finished when we arrived,” Thomas recalled.

“We took delivery of and fitted the new suspension in the hotel car park three days before the rally.

“The first test drive of the car was on the first stage! Luckily all was well and it handled great.”

While there were budget constraints towards the end of the season, Dave and Kelly’s consistent performances were enough to secure the crown after four rounds.

We were lucky to wrap it up after the fourth round,” Dave said.

“Although it would have been fantastic to have competed in them.”

The Thomas’ journey was supported by their loyal service crew, family, and friends, with Dave expressing heartfelt gratitude.

“Thanks must go to the DCL crew who made it possible for our KAT Racing cars to get to and from events, and a massive thanks to all our service crew for looking after us in WA and also flying east, it’s very much appreciated,” Dave acknowledged.

“To Kelly, my daughter, who is also an amazing navigator, and special thanks to Georgie, my wife, who luckily loves rallying and supports all of us.”

Despite the challenges, their love for the 2WD Cup shines through.

“We’ve loved every round and would do it all again in a heartbeat – just need one Powerball!” Dave joked.

The 2025 ARC season begins with the Rally of Canberra on 21-23 March.
