A recent convert to gravel rally, Adam’s motor sport background began on tarmac.
An experienced tarmac rally competitor, Adam first competed in Targa Tasmania in 1993. In 1994 through to 1997, he also campaigned a Reynard 91D in the Australian Drivers’ Championship, his best year in 1994, finishing third in the championship.
In 2016 Adam contested the ARC in his Mazda RX7, taking out the Australian 2WD Rally Championship in his debut year. He successfully defended his title in 2017.
In 2018, Adam retired the RX7 to run a Nissan 370Z.
Favourite rally event:
I love them all, the tarmac, gravel, noted and blind. So long as I’m driving competitively I’m happy.
Favourite rally stage:
Probably Mt Crawford in SA. It has a bit of everything and a very spectacular jump!
Very first rally memory/experience:
Well, I only started gravel two years ago, but my earliest tarmac experience was the second Targa Tasmania way back in the early 90s… I was younger!
The moment you knew you were hooked on rally:
I had no idea how gravel guys managed to turn a car in on the loose stuff so I went and did an ice-driving course in Lapland – as soon as I worked out how to do it I knew I was hooked!
Career highlight to date:
Winning the ARC 2WD Championship two years in a row, however beating 4WD cars on stages is what drives me.
Most memorable rally moment:
There was a hilarious “faecal incident” at Rally SA where I learned never to eat risotto before the night stages…and a very memorable crash in Adelaide in 2007 in my Giocattolo.
But probably pulling into time control at Coffs Harbour and watching my navigator’s jaw drop as Andreas Mikkelsen casually sauntered over for a chat, in reality he was asking why we were in the same line as him in such an old car…but I don’t think she heard any of that.
Dream rally car:
Any old school Group B or any current WRC car.
Dream road car:
One that drives itself.
Current road car:
HSV GTSR W1.
Who is your idol or inspiration:
Jim Richards, a legend and an absolute gentleman to boot!
Best advice ever received:
To finish first, first you must finish! It took me a while to understand this, as simple as it seems, but I can credit most of my results to this doctrine.
If you could invite three people to dinner, who would they be:
I need an extra seat, I have four kids!
Tell us one thing about yourself most people don’t know:
I’m very sensitive…
First competitive rally:
Targa Tasmania 1993.
Lightforce Rally SA 2016.
2016 & 2017 Australian Rally 2WD Champion.
2017 Classic Adelaide winner and 2017 Targa Tasmania Early Modern winner.
