Last year, Westside Acton was the heart of the event, hosting the Service Park and Start and Finish ceremonies. For the 2016 event, organisers will be making that venue even more exciting for guests and spectators, by incorporating a Super Special Stage on the roads along Lake Burley Griffin.
“We received great feedback about the 2015 event, with over 10,000 spectators coming out to watch over the three days, and we know we have to set the bar even higher in 2016. To increase spectator engagement, we’ve planned the Ceremonial start to lead directly into a purpose-built Super Special Stage, which is located next to the Service Park, right in the heart of the city,” said Event Manager Dougal Wilson.
“The new Super Special Stage gives spectators a fantastic opportunity to witness the cars in action without needing to travel into the forest while also allowing them to meet the drivers, co-drivers and service crews in the Service Park”.
“By making these changes to the format of the rally, we aim to maximise the enjoyment and value for money for all involved, and affirm the National Capital Rally as a premier sporting experience in Canberra,” concluded Wilson.
The 2016 event also sees independent hotelier, Doma Hotels, partner as the sole accommodation sponsor of the rally. Doma Hotels will offer discounted rates across their five Canberra properties for all rally participants and attendees. Doma Hotels is further leveraging their involvement by taking over the vehicle signage on local competitor Adrian Coppin’s newly acquired Toyota Corolla Super 2000.
Chief Executive Director of Doma Hotels, Patrick Lonergan, stated, “the partnership offers a great opportunity for Doma Hotels to support sporting tourism in Canberra; we are excited to align with Adrian and the event and offer promotions across the rally dates for drivers, crew, spectators and their friends and families.”
The ACT is home to many notable rally drivers and co-drivers, including four-times Australian Rally Champion Neal Bates and current competitors Adrian Coppin, Michael Patton and Harry Bates; all of whom are due to line up for the Kumho Tyre Australian Rally Championship® component of the event.
