With more than 250 rallies around the world to his name, there aren’t many Australian co-drivers with more experience than Glen Macneall.
Having entered the international rally scene back in the early 1990s, Macneall’s career of three decades has seen him partner with up to 15 different drivers across a variety of international and domestic championships, most notably the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC), FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC).
Stints calling the notes for the likes of Greg Graham, Kevin ‘Stumpy’ Holmes, Toshi Arai, and Dean Herridge – all coincidentally in Subaru machinery – culminated in partnering Australia last full-time WRC driver Chris Atkinson.
The duo spent 2005 to 2007 competing in the WRC together and picking up a number of a top-10 finishes, including a career high third place at Rally Japan in 2005.
Speaking with Adrian Coppin on the ARC Service Park, Macneall revealed his favourite moment alongside Atkinson during those seasons.
“Finishing on the podium in Rally Japan was pretty cool but I think Rally Australia in 2005 and 2006 were probably the main highlights,” Macneall said.
“We led the event in both years which leads to probably one of the biggest regrets I’ve got because we didn’t go on to win the rallies.
“One year we had a problem and lost a few minutes. We then chased hard to finish fourth by nine or 10 seconds. The other year, something on the car actually broke and we went off the road.
“They’re probably the biggest disappointments and highlights at the same time.”
Outside of his time with Atkinson, Macneall has also formed a strong international partnership in the APRC and WRC with Indian star Gaurav Gill.
However another standout event for 47-year-old away from the international scene was rallying with Nathan Quinn at Rally Australia in 2013, which just highlighted his love affair with competing on home soil.
“There are so many stand out events that I have done over my career,” Macneall added.
“But doing your home WRC rally every year is such a cool opportunity, especially being in your home country and competing against the best in the world.
“Rally Australia with Nathan that year (2013) was super cool. Having so much support and no expectations and then doing an amazing job was fantastic.”
