Commission FAQ's

What does the Commission do?

The Commission advises the Board of CAMS on matters impacting on rally and road events in Australia.  These include gravel and tarmac rallies, touring road events and rallysprints.

Who appoints the members of the Commission?

The Chair and the members of the commission are appointed by the Board of CAMS.  Each State Sport and Club Development Commission nominates a representative and the Board of CAMS appoints the Chair and 2 representatives.  CAMS administration provides administrative support through the Rally Manager.  In 2009 this position was held by Mr Campbell Andrea.

Who are the current members?

Colin Trinder (Chairman), Ben Rainsford (Deputy Chairman), Michael Clements, Adrian Dudok, Ross Ferguson, Peter Macneall, Ross Runnalls, Darryn Snooks and George Shepheard.

What remuneration do members receive?

Members of the commission are volunteers and receive no remuneration.  CAMS meets travel expenses incurred by members attending face to face meetings.  Some telephone expenses are reimbursed.

How often does the Commission meet?

Members routinely meets via teleconference about every 4-6 weeks.  A large amount of business is routinely transacted via email, and telephone between meetings.  In addition the Chairman, Deputy Chairman, ARC sporting director, CAMS Rally Manager and any other interested Commission members have a weekly teleconference to plan actions and manage rally business.  The Commissioners meet face to face once or twice a year.

How do I bring a matter to the Commision's attention?

Depending on the complexity of the matter and the degree of consultation necessary, there are a number of avenues through which matters can be considered by the Commission.  Routine matters - such as issues around technical rules, can be dealt with via an email to the CAMS Rally Manager.  Alternatively a member of CAMS may raise an issue through their State Rally Panel, Sport and Club Development Commission or State ARCom representative.

How long does it take the Commision to consider my issue?

Matters that have the potential to impact on others enjoyment of their sport can expect to be circulated to Sport and Club Development Commissions, Rally Panels and the general membership before being formally considered by the Commission.  Urgent and straightforward matters can be resolved in a few days, however, the process for more complex issues and rule changes can take several months for consultation and review of proposals.

Are there sub-committees associated with the the work of the Commission?

There are volunteer working groups reporting to members considering Tarmac rallies and the Australian Rally Championship (ARC).  The ARC working group liaises with organisers and is responsible for managing the Championships' commercial business.  For the purpose of transacting business associated with the ARC the working group is an incorporated company.  Many people refer to this working group by its company title 'Rallycorp'.  The ARC website has a separate page specifically devoted to dispelling the myths about the role and function of this working group.

Is the Commission responsible for everything relating to rally and road events in Australia?

Most but not all.  The Commission is responsible for making only those decisions about matters that are delegated to it by the Board of CAMS.  As a general rule each state is responsible for matters relating only to each state.  Other Commissions are also responsible for activities that impact on the conduct of rally and road events – such as licencing of officials.  The Board of CAMS and the administration, through the CEO, are also responsible for a range of matters, such as administration and finances, interaction with Government regulatory agencies etc.  State Sport and Club Development Commissions sometimes work directly to the CEO and the Board of CAMS on some issues – the NSW Rally Registration Scheme being one example.
