Subaru rally driver Chris Atkinson has crashed out of Wales Rally GB on the penultimate stage of the opening day of the event. Battling wet and slippery conditions across the day, Atkinson was in sixth place after Special Stage 6. But then in heavy rain and with spotlights blazing in the pitch black evening, the Queenslander left the road on a tight, icy corner just 180 metres into Stage 7 in a high-speed crash.

While Sebasiten Loeb has already wrapped-up his fifth straight World title from Mikko Hirvonen, and Danni Sordo looks secure in third on 59 points, the Australian is tied for fourth place with Finnish driver, Jari-Matti Latvala, on 50 points.
