Toyota’s Neal Bates has extended his lead in the Australian Rally Championship after winning Heat 2 of the Tasmanian Tarmac Challenge at Burnie, in the state’s north west. Driving a TRD Corolla S2000, Bates had to fight hard for his victory. He trailed privateer Spencer Lowndes for much of the day, only reeling in the Mitsubishi driver on the penultimate stage.

Blistering through the second day’s six rain-soaked stages, the Mazda3 MPS driven by 20-year-old rally star Brendan Reeves finished eighth outright, and was the quickest two-wheel drive car in the competition.
