Peter Dunn will return to the CAMS Australian Rally Championship for the Netier National Capital Rally, tackling the one-day event in the Subaru WRX STi he used at last year’s Kennards Hire Rally Australia.
Despite many hoping the New South Welshman would bring out his highly anticipated Subaru BRZ, Dunn has once again played it safe and opted to wait another round.
With plans to compete in at least four rounds in 2019, including the Eureka Rally and one of either the BOTT Adelaide Hills Rally or Subaru Rally Tasmania, Dunn is certain the car will be making its long awaited appearance soon.
“We will be in the BRZ from the next round onwards. We have some things to do before it’s ready to go but it’s not very far off,” Dunn said.
“It’s running ok, but we just ran out of time in getting parts for the BRZ. I could have taken it to Canberra, but I wouldn’t be confident and we want the car to finish its first event so we’ll most likely do a local event first.
“We really want to get it out there because it’s been three months of flat out work. It’s a totally new car and new concept.
“If we took the suspension off the STi and put it in the BRZ, it would be ready, but right now the STi is a safe bet for so that is our car of choice for Canberra.”
While he has every intent in competing in the Championship’s final round on the Coffs Coast to replicate his brilliant fourth place in 2018, Dunn’s main focus this year will be to get into the World Rally Championship (WRC) season finale through the ARC2.
“Our main goal is to have fun, but we are also in it for the ARC2,” Dunn added.
“We would love that ARC2 spot in Rally Australia at the end of the year. Who doesn’t want to see a black BRZ running around at the WRC? We definitely do and I think everyone else does.”
“After a strong couple of performances last year, we thought let’s give ARC2 a good crack. That is our target this year and we are going to start this weekend with Canberra.”
For the ARC’s second round in 2019, Dunn’s car will be looking a little different to the last time he entered the championship, with new sponsor Penny’s Crackling to be prominent on the car.
Despite the car’s reliability across a three day event being one of its strongest points, Dunn is still confident of a strong result in the first of the ARC’s one day rallies.
“We still go alright in Canberra. I am quite familiar with the roads so I am looking forward to it,” Dunn added.
The Netier Capital Capital Rally takes place on 11 May around the forests of Canberra.
Spectating is free for all spectators across Saturday.
